Solved my first and possibly last Sudoku on the train yesterday, compliments of complimentary AM NY. Don't know what the fuss is about, seems pretty straight-forward and therefore boring... Wrote a Perl program that solves 9x9 puzzles, tested on a few, seems to work. Builds a table of valid choices for each empty square, then checks whether each choice is unique for its row, column, or 3x3 box, in which case selects and updates the table. Passes through the whole choice space and repeats until either complete or irreducible. I suppose it could brute-force the irreducible set to get multiple valid solutions... Whats the catch? If curious, program is here. Accepts a text file with 9x9 matrix of numbers 1-9 and 'x' to indicate empty square, separated by spaces. Need to have Perl installed.
